Uganda is one of Africa's largest coffee producers and the crop remains a cornerstone of the country's agricultural export earnings. Growth in the sector is driven by a combination of favourable agro-ecology, policy focus, and rising global demand for quality Arabica and Robusta.
Production and geography
Coffee is grown across several regions, including the slopes of Mount Elgon, the Rwenzori foothills, and parts of central and western Uganda. Robusta dominates by volume and is well suited to lower altitudes; Arabica is grown at higher elevations and commands premium prices.
Quality and value addition
Efforts to improve quality—through better processing, certification, and traceability—are helping Ugandan coffee access specialty markets. Value addition (e.g. roasting and packaging) is also expanding, though the bulk of exports are still green beans.
Outlook
With continued investment in seedlings, farmer training, and market linkages, Uganda's coffee sector is well placed to grow further and to benefit smallholder farmers who form the backbone of production.
