Uganda's natural water bodies have long supplied fish, but overfishing and pressure on lakes have increased interest in aquaculture. Farmed fish can contribute to nutrition and incomes while easing pressure on wild stocks.

Growth and species

Aquaculture is expanding with tilapia and catfish as main species. Ponds, cages, and tanks are used depending on land and water availability. Quality fingerlings and feed are essential for good results.

Challenges

Feed costs, disease management, and access to water and land can constrain farmers. Extension and training on pond management, stocking density, and marketing help improve productivity and profitability.

Opportunities

Demand for fish is strong in Uganda and the region. With the right support—quality inputs, technical advice, and market linkages—aquaculture can become a significant source of protein and income for smallholders.
