Cotton was once a major export for Uganda but declined for decades. Recent efforts aim to revive the crop and link it to domestic textile and garment production, creating jobs and adding value.

Production and constraints

Cotton is grown mainly in northern and eastern Uganda. Farmers face price volatility, pest pressure, and competition from other crops. Improved varieties and better extension can raise yields and fibre quality.

Value addition

Ginning, spinning, and weaving add value and employment. Policies and investments that support the entire chain—from seed to garment—can help Uganda capture more of the global textile value chain.

Outlook

With sustained focus on productivity, quality, and processing, cotton can again become a meaningful cash crop and a driver of rural and industrial growth.
