Extension services connect farmers to new knowledge, technologies, and practices. In Uganda, extension is delivered by government, NGOs, private companies, and farmer groups—often in partnership.

What extension provides

Extension agents and facilitators share information on improved varieties, soil management, pest control, post-harvest handling, and marketing. Demonstrations, field days, and farmer field schools are common methods.

Challenges

Coverage is uneven; remote areas may have limited access. Funding and capacity of public extension can be stretched. Private and NGO-led extension often targets specific value chains or project areas.

Integration with inputs and markets

When extension is combined with access to quality inputs and reliable buyers, adoption and impact increase. Integrated programmes that link training, inputs, irrigation, and off-taking can transform productivity at scale.
