Uganda exports a range of high-value crops that earn foreign exchange and support rural incomes. Vanilla, cocoa, and tea are among the most notable, each with distinct growing areas and value chains.
Vanilla
Uganda is a significant producer of natural vanilla, mainly in the southwest. Prices are volatile and quality depends on curing and handling. Farmers who receive training and reliable buyers can benefit from premium markets.
Cocoa
Cocoa is grown in the west and other suitable areas. Quality fermentation and drying are critical for export grades. Support for planting material, post-harvest practices, and market linkages can expand production and improve returns.
Tea
Tea is produced on estates and by smallholders in the highland areas. Processing is often done by factories that buy green leaf. Improving productivity and quality at farm level supports the whole sector.
Together, these crops illustrate how targeted support for quality, aggregation, and export channels can strengthen Uganda's agricultural trade.
