Karamoja, in Uganda's northeast, is one of the country's most climate-vulnerable regions. Recurrent drought, combined with historical factors, affects livelihoods and food security. Building resilience is a priority for government and partners.

Context

Rainfall is erratic and dry spells are common. Many households depend on livestock and seasonal cropping. When rains fail, crops and pasture suffer and families become vulnerable to food shortages.

Resilience strategies

Drought-tolerant crops, small-scale irrigation where feasible, water harvesting, and improved livestock management can help. So can diversification of income and stronger links to markets so that surplus in good years can be sold and savings used in bad years.

Partnerships

Programmes that combine climate-smart practices, quality inputs, and reliable off-taking can support farmers in Karamoja and similar regions. Long-term commitment and context-specific solutions are essential.
