Livestock—cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, and poultry—contribute to livelihoods, nutrition, and income across Uganda. Dairy in particular has seen growth in production and formal market channels, though smallholders still face constraints.

Cattle and dairy

Dairy farming is concentrated in areas with suitable pasture and access to markets. Improved breeds, better feed, and animal health services can raise milk yields. Collection centres and cooperatives help smallholders reach processors and consumers.

Small ruminants and poultry

Goats and sheep require less land and can be a source of quick income. Poultry (layers and broilers) is increasingly commercialised, with demand for eggs and meat in urban centres. Feed quality and disease control are critical.

Opportunities

With rising demand for animal-source foods, livestock and dairy offer pathways for diversification. Supporting farmers with inputs, extension, and market linkages can help them capture more value from the sector.
