Demand for organic produce is rising in local and export markets. Uganda has a growing number of certified organic farmers and exporters, particularly in coffee, cocoa, fruits, and vegetables.
Why organic?
Organic production can offer price premiums, reduce reliance on synthetic inputs, and align with sustainable land use. For smallholders, the transition often involves soil building, pest management without prohibited chemicals, and record-keeping for certification.
Certification and support
Certification costs and procedures can be a barrier. Group certification and support from buyers or NGOs can help. Access to organic-compliant inputs and extension is important for farmers to maintain yields and quality.
Outlook
As consumers and buyers seek more sustainable and traceable supply chains, organic and near-organic production will remain relevant. Linking farmers to stable markets and quality inputs supports both productivity and sustainability.
